Escaping Minnesota Winter, documenting family moments and soaking up the winter light.

A WINTER DAY AT THE COMO CONSERVATORY IN ST PAUL, MN
Recently, I spent an afternoon with my daughter and my mom at the St. Paul Como Park Conservatory. It was a sunny but cold day in February that felt like we needed to leave the house and “do something”. Longing for warmer summer days, we wanted to be surrounded by living green plants and warm air. A favorite winter tradition of our family since my mom began bringing me here as a young girl.
Right as we arrived I noticed how amazing the setting sun was for a few photos. My daughter was willing to be my model to capture a few images before heading in to the warmth of the conservatory. Winter sessions can be especially magical. The light this time of year is soft and flattering, it’s like golden hour stretching all afternoon.
After spending a few chilly moments outside, we went to warm up in the gardens. Instantly we were rewarded with humid tropical temps. From the moment you step inside the Conservatory, the cold Minnesota winter fades away. Warm air, lush green plants and filtered sunlight make it feel like you’ve been transported somewhere tropical.
As we wandered the paths around the conservatory, I couldn’t help but think how absolutely timeless this place is. It feels the same to me as it did when my mom brought me here all those years ago. It was one of those simple afternoons that turns into a memory right before your eyes.
The mix of gardens, classic architecture and the whimsical nature of the zoo itself with an antique carousel create a timeless backdrop. It’s a wonderful place to make memories and escape the frozen tundra Minnesota winters can bring.
The older I get, the more I realize how quickly seasons change, both in life and in family. Photos freeze a moment we can return to again and again. Someday these simple images from an ordinary afternoon might end up being everything.
Because someday these photos will mean everything.
SENIOR + FAMILY SESSIONS
I should mention, professional photography isn’t allowed inside the Conservatory without a permit. However, the outdoor spaces around the park are just lovely. The pathways near the pond and outdoor fountain, the white-washed stone work and the glass backdrop of the conservatory itself offer so many different backdrops any time of the year.
If you’re planning any type of photoshoot this year, whether it’s senior photos, family photos, or need to update your headshot and the idea of nature meets classic architecture, then the conservatory could be a fun place to explore.
I’m always looking for beautiful and meaningful locations to explore. If you have a favorite place you want to capture memories in or would like help choosing one, I’d love to connect and plan something special.
